3Space About Projects Team Landlords 3Space T&Cs Contact Menu Turning empty space into an opportunity About Projects Team Landlords 3Space T&Cs Contact BuyGiveWork @ Keeton's & Collett A former college in Bermondsey London awaiting redevelopment is now a 2,000sqm workspace with 'Green Lab'. BuyGiveWork means for every desk purchased, one will be provided free of charge to a non-profit, local start-up, or experimental project. This is the first time the Buy One Give One approach (used from food to shoes) has been applied to property. It fills the space quickly whilst enabling experimentation and collaboration between locals and non-locals. Green Lab is a social enterprise and permaculture lab focused on developing sustainable food systems and urban agriculture initiatives by bringing together food related startups. One of the start-ups inside Green Lab is Friche; they will produce 50 lettuces every fortnight via a vertical window farm in the main entry space, which also acts as a building screen. Workspace users will take part in the growing, and there will be monthly community lunches and supper clubs in the Green Lab. Client: Grosvenor Location: Keeton's Road, London Website: http://www.keetonsandcollett.co.uk Status: Current with space available, arrange a viewing via info@3space.org BuyGiveWork @ Platform Four Situated above the MEN Arena in Manchester BuyGiveWork @ Platform Four is our latest venture - a co-working space launched in early 2017. This follows on from the success of our BuyGiveWork approach in Bermondsey, London. More information on the project and approach is provided below: A new initiative by non-profit urban agency 3Space aims to bring tech start-ups, small businesses and corporate teams closer to local non-profits and experimental projects. This is the first time the Buy One Give One business model, made famous by TOMS shoes, has been applied to property. BuyGiveWork was launched in London at co-working space Keeton’s and Collett in late 2016 and is now to expanding to Platform Four - 3Space’s new space in Manchester. As in London, for every space purchased one will be given away to a non-profit serving the local area or for an experimental community-led idea In doing this 3Space aims to bring a greater sense of purpose to the typical work environment. The benefits for the non-profits are obvious but 3Space believe that it is the businesses purchasing space who will benefit the most. Businesses will have the opportunity to support the local community and causes every day, but also gain insight and innovate from the diversity this unique relationship brings. 3Space CEO Andrew Cribb says, “We don’t like the term CSR because so often it means something unconnected such as painting a fence, whereas we believe the coming-together of work environments provides a real opportunity for shared value exchanges between for-profits and non-profits.” For example in Bermondsey space has been provided free-of-charge for the experimental Green Lab, where start-ups and academics are working on urban growing technologies. Concepts like this cannot afford to pay rent and require space to establish themselves, but the benefits are enormous for both the paying businesses and the local community. One of the start-ups from the Green Lab, Friche has created a vertical growing wall producing fresh lettuces which also provides a privacy screen for workers in the meeting space. The same start-up also shares a selection of fresh vegetables grown in the Lab once a month with the businesses who have paid for space. Residents from the local area have been invited to join in with the series of creative and educational events held in the space. Another example is the charity Re-Start Project, who works to reduce the amount of electronics going to waste, and have hosted one of their famous Re-Start Parties in the space to show people how to fix their broken IPhones rather than throwing them away. Cribb says, “There are plenty of resources available helping start-ups and SMEs with funding and business advice but not so much showing them how to embed themselves locally within the social fabric and benefit society more widely. Founders of modern start-ups and small businesses are also often conscious consumers themselves and we believe the informal approach of BuyGiveWork can help to integrate new approaches into the growth and development of their company from the beginning“ “We’re really excited about Platform Four in Manchester. It has been fitted-out by local craftsman we met from our previous Manchester project in London Scottish House, and designed by architect Jennifer Chen, who was a long-time project leader at Thomas Heatherwick studio and whose work includes the Kings Cross redevelopment in London. She brought into this project a design that is rich in materiality and atmosphere. The views from the space and the private office pods are some of the best in the city, and with Manchester’s largest communal table at the centre of the floor, the space perfectly encapsulated our vision to promote an innovative and a sharing environment." This not the first time 3Space has combined businesses with grassroots non-profits and innovative ideas. 3Space previously worked with Barclays on the Hatch project to re-purpose its bank branches into co-working and maker spaces. The charity has a long history maximizing the use of under-utilised space for innovative community ideas in Manchester – from the retail warehouse space on Great Ancoats Street in 2013 which helped establish Manchester’s first circus training facility Circus House CIC to the 40,000 Sq ft London Scottish House, which was repurposed last year into a creative space used by 600 design students from Manchester Met University for their final show and as a launch-pad for wood-working Maker space Manchester MCR. Further information on pricing and criteria for free of charge space are available on the Platform Four site 3Space Manchester Working with landlord partners FORE, from previous project 3Space Blackfriars, 3Space managed the temporary use of 45,000 sq ft former HQ for London Scottish bank in central Manchester. For 10 months, the building provided a home for a number of creative and community minded residents such as MCR Makerspace, Partisan Collective and The Actor’s Guild, as well as three artist collectives. During their time at London Scottish House, 3Space hosted numerous events. Partnering with Manchester Metropolitan University and Manchester After Hours festival, the building became a gallery showing the work of 600 art and design students for their end of year exhibition. Other events have included martial arts workshops from the Tai Chi School, immersive theatre performance from Take Back Theatre and a secret gig hosted by Sofar Sounds. By offering ...
